The concept of brunch has been spreading rapidly throughout Spain in recent years. In Barcelona, for example, it has long been an established gastronomic concept that transcends the culinary sphere and has become a social event in its own right. Brunch in Barcelona, especially at the weekend, is synonymous with a culture of enjoyment and shared experiences.
And of course, at Generation B we also offer a healthy brunch that is finger-licking good . A type of brunch in Barcelona that you have to try.
Let us explain!
We explain what brunch really is
It's an Anglo-Saxon concept that we've adopted in Spain almost as our own. Not quite as our own, but absolutely common and recognisable in gastronomic jargon. The word comes from the combination of breakfast and lunch, a hybrid concept that generally takes place between 11:00 and 16:00. As we have already said, it is not just about eating, but in many cases more of a social event.
In Barcelona, we usually enjoy it in the sunshine, on terraces, with speciality coffee and, increasingly, with options that are good for the body. At Generation B, you can have it all, so what are you waiting for? Come and enjoy a healthy brunch in Barcelona with us at !
A typical brunch in Barcelona is savoury and healthy
Nowadays, the king of brunch in Barcelona is not the classic heavy dish, but special toast and nutritious bowls, for example. According to our menu at Generation B, a typical savoury brunch would include:
☑️ Sourdough or gluten-free toast
This is the basis of everything. In Barcelona, we look for quality breads and are making our own tasty gluten-free bread, undoubtedly the best in the city! Healthy and tasty, unlike most gluten-free breads we've tried.
A healthy toast option is truffled avocado toast. It has a base of avocado, poached egg (essential for brunch) and a touch of truffle oil.
Another option is Norwegian toast, with cured salmon, artisan gluten-free bread, creamy stracciatella, avocado, cherry tomatoes, fresh spinach, sesame seeds and a duo of tahini and teriyaki sauces. A delight for your brunch in Barcelona!

Or the Marrakech toast, with artisan gluten-free bread with Mediterranean escalibada, roasted pepper pâté, cherry tomatoes, creamy goat's cheese, tender spinach, aromatic pesto and a crunchy touch of sunflower seeds. Another culinary marvel.
Visit our menu to see the brunch options you can enjoy.
☑️ Healthy bowls of real food

Or the Fungi Flow bowl, made with grilled seasonal mushrooms, kale, spinach, grilled aubergine, brown rice, grilled courgette and pistachios. A healthy, nutritious and flavourful meal, part of a healthy and restorative brunch in Barcelona .

We have more than 15 types of bowls at Generation B, so there's no shortage of options!
- Mediterranean bowl with prawns.
- Mediterranean bowl with turkey.
- Omega bowl with salmon.
- Keto balance bowl with goat's cheese.
- Chicken bowl.
- Plant vitality bowl.
Among others. Choose the one you fancy most for your healthy brunch!
☑️ Sweet options: The finishing touch
Even if you prefer savoury dishes, brunch in Barcelona almost always ends with something sweet shared at the table (or just for you, depending on how hungry you still are ).
We would recommend, for example, a slice of lemon cake (gluten-free and refined sugar-free), a little banana bread (with walnuts and chocolate, gluten-free and refined sugar-free), one of our homemade cheesecakes (strawberry, mango or chocolate) or a wonderful slice of chocolate cake.

Healthy and gluten-free options for your brunch in Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the most "GF friendly" cities in Europe. In our restaurant, almost any option can be adapted, but the most popular choices today are:
- Our own artisan gluten-free bread: We no longer settle for industrial sliced bread. We make our own artisan gluten-free bread. It's tastier and fluffier. Our Generation B chefs are proud to be able to make such high-quality bread with natural flours (such as buckwheat or rice) for all our customers with lactose intolerance.
- Smoothies: A Barcelona brunch isn't complete without a "Green Juice" (e.g. apple, spinach, celery, ginger) that aids digestion and provides extra vitamins, or an energising açai smoothie (açai, banana and vegetable protein).
- Speciality coffee: With plant-based milks (oat, almond or coconut) that are non-inflammatory and retain all the flavour of the beans roasted locally in Barcelona.
If you have any food intolerances and visit us at Generation B, please ask us as we can usually adapt any of our menu options to your needs.
Many of our options are already adapted, as we are one of the gluten-free restaurants in the centre of Barcelona (https://generationb.es/restaurante-sin-gluten-barcelona/) with the most options of this type available, but we can always go further and meet the gastronomic requests of our customers .
Fancy brunch at Generation B?
Come on, I'm sure you said yes , so when you come to visit us, you can design your own brunch with the variety of healthy toasties and bowls we have on the menu.
Any suggestions? Well, an oat milk latte and fresh orange juice are ideal drinks. On the savoury side, as mentioned, we have almost 10 types of toast to choose from, but the avocado with Moroccan spices (on gluten-free bread) is the best. And for a sweet treat to share, go for an açaí bowl with lots of fresh fruit.
It's a combination that leaves you feeling satisfied, energised and, most importantly, without that heavy feeling you get from traditional brunches loaded with trans fats. Our healthy brunch in Barcelona is just the opposite .
Essential neighbourhoods for brunch in Barcelona
You can do it almost anywhere in the city, but there are some areas that are more popular for enjoying this gastronomic option, such as l'Eixample, Gràcia or Poblenou.
In fact, L'Esquerra de l'Eixample, where we are located, Generation B, is a very popular area for brunch establishments in Barcelona. It is a very authentic area and less crowded than the city centre. Between Sants station and Plaza España, you will find perfect places to enjoy brunch options.
Sant Antoni
We can say that Sant Antoni is the neighbourhood where the brunch craze began in Barcelona. Carrer Parlament is the epicentre. It is ideal if you are looking for a young, hipster atmosphere with many vegetarian options.
Poblenou
A great plan is to have brunch on a Sunday morning in the neighbourhood and then walk a mere 5 minutes to the beach and Bogatell to enjoy the sea breeze. A real luxury, without a doubt. In Poblenou, there are many bright establishments with outdoor terraces where you can relax and enjoy a brunch menu in the city of Barcelona.
Gràcia
The last area we'd like to highlight is Gràcia. This neighbourhood is full of squares with small brunch spots that have a village feel and soul. Here, brunch in Barcelona is a more relaxed affair, enjoyed while sitting on a terrace in Plaça de la Virreina or Plaça de la Revolució. Go for it!
Brunch at home? Here's a recipe from Generation B for you to try the experience
If you enjoy cooking and trying new things in your own home, here's a delicious recommendation: Basil and Pine Nut Pesto (gluten-free).
We're sharing the secret of our pesto, which we use on toast and in courgette pasta dishes. It's very powerful and healthy!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of fresh basil (leaves only).
- 1/2 cup of Spanish pine nuts (lightly toasted in a frying pan to release their oil).
- 1 small clove of garlic (remove the central germ so it doesn't repeat).
- 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) from the first pressing.
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (this gives it a cheesy flavour without using dairy products and provides vitamin B12).
- A pinch of sea salt.
Preparation:
- Place the basil, pine nuts, garlic and yeast in a mortar (if you want the authentic texture) or in a blender.
- Add the oil gradually while blending at low speed so as not to heat the basil (if it heats up, it oxidises and turns black).
- Use it on avocado toast... the change is incredible!
Conclusions
